A good indication of the condition of a chain is the appearance of the wood chips produced; a sharper chain will produce fine and even wood chips, whereas a dull chain generates sawdust.

You will need a corresponding file or combination gauge to sharpen chain cutters correctly, which are available as optional extras, often in varying convenient pack sizes, to best suit your personal frequency of use.

Filing the cutting teeth
File using a light and even pressure with gentle pushing strokes, parallel to the gauge; try to get the same length of all cutters.

Filing the depth gauge
File all the way down to the gauge. If you file the depth gauge without a tool you will risk of filing them too far dwon and the chain will produce chips, which are too thick.
